In 2017/2018, The National Chaplaincy Training Centre conducted a research on the need for School Chaplains and how current chaplains were prepared to provide spiritual care needs to students.
The results revealed that most chaplains were not prepared to handle student spiritual needs. This is because most of them revealed that they had not received any professional training as chaplains, in any case, they had been trained as pastors or counselors.
The Chaplains expressed need for training that would cover areas such as stress management, family issues, alcohol, drugs and substance abuse, problems associated with adolescent, and spiritual issues such involvement with cults among others.
There is growing realization in the Kenyan society that there is need for critical skills in the management of emotional, psychological and spiritual issues as indicated by the burning of schools, incidences of sexual immorality; drugs and substance abuse, the type of discipline and punishment applied in the schools.
The pew research revealed that there is no training for chaplains for educational institutions in Kenya. Most of these chaplains were trained as pastors or counselors. Therefore missing a critical aspect of spiritual care provision.
