About National Chaplaincy Training Centre

The National Chaplaincy Training Centre is academically housed in the Department of Philosophy, Religion and Theology at Moi University. We have rolled out a virtual certification program that focuses on equipping different chaplains: school chaplains, hospital chaplains, and prisons chaplains to help them serve professionally in their respective areas. 

Our one goal is to train chaplains and equip them professionally so that they can provide better spiritual care.

Prof Hazel Ayanga

Prof Hazel Ayanga, a Kenyan female born approximately sixty years ago, is Professor of Religious Studies at Moi University . Her doctoral thesis was on the secularization process and its impact on Christianity in Eldoret. Her research interests are on the care and empowerment of Orphans and Vulnerable children and women affected by HIV and AIDS. Thus her post-doctoral studies at Yale University were in the area of Theological responses to HIV and AIDS. Hazel is the Chairperson of the committee.

Dr. Paul Nyongesa 

Dr. Paul Nyongesa, MBCHB MMED (U.O.N) born in 1956 is a lecturer in Reproductive Health in Moi University- School of Medicine (MU-SOM). He qualified as a consultant obstetrician in 1991 from University of Nairobi. He is married with 2 daughters. Currently enrolled in a PHD program in Medical Anthropology in the School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) which also houses theology courses. He practices as a consultant at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), the teaching hospital for the College of Health Sciences.

Prof Eunice Kamaara

Prof Eunice Kamaara, a Kenyan female born 1965, is Professor of Religious Studies at Moi University and International Affiliate of Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI). She holds a doctorate in African Christian Ethics. Her research interest is in holistic health. Individually and with others, she has carried out major researches in the area. Eunice is Presbyterian by birth, Roman Catholic by marriage, and Christian by choice. She serves as Secretary to the committee.

Rev. Edith K. Chemorion

Rev. Edith K. Chemorion is lecturer at Moi University in the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy, Religion and Theology. She is an ordained minister of word and sacrament with the Reformed Church of East Africa. She is currently serving as an Associate Minister at RCEA Kapsengerut (Youth ministry), and RCEA Kawangware Parish (South Sudanese Outreach and Psycho-Social services) in Nairobi, Kenya. Rev. Chemorion is a member of CPE-Eldoret planning committee, CPE Educator, Counsellor Supervisor and CPE Practicum Supervisor. She holds Master of Theology Degree in Clinical Pastoral Care and Counselling (HIV/Ministry) from Stellenbosch University. She is a Phd Candidate at North West University, South Africa. Rev. Chemorion formerly worked with ICM-African theological Seminary in Kitale, Kenya, as Dean Psychological-Counselling Department, and also worked as an Assistant manager at AMPATH (Outreach and Retention /Department).

Dr. Mohamed Suleiman Mraja

Dr Mohamed Suleiman Mraja is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, Religion and Theology, Moi University. He obtained his Ph. D from Albert-Ludwigs University, Germany in 2006. Areas of Specialization are Islamic Family Law, Muslim Personalities, Religion and HIV/AIDS. Mohamed is Co-Treasurer.

Dr. Lucy I. Kiyiapi

Lucy I. Kiyiapi is a Lecturer, School of Publich Health, Moi University. She holds a PhD, (Counseling Psychology); MTh (Masters in Theology and Education); BA in religion. Her areas of teaching and research interests are Spirituality/health, Health Education, Disaster and Trauma Counseling, the phycological impact of disaster, religion and human suffering, health systems and health care delivery to minority groups, HIV/AIDS and the psychological wellbeing of orphans, Spirituality and healing. Lucy is a Committee Member.

Dr Joseph K. Koech

Joseph Koech, a Kenyan male born 1961 is Associate Professor and Head of Department of Philosophy, Religion and Theology at Moi University and adjunct Lecturer at Africa International University, Nairobi. He is also a pastor at Jesus Healing Ministries in Eldoret, Kenya. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion with special focus in New Testament Studies. His research interests are in Christian leadership and pastoral care.

Prof. Emily J. Choge Kerama

Prof Emily J. Choge Kerama is a female Kenyan born in 1959. She obtained her Ph.D. in Theology from Fuller Theological College, California. She teaches issues in social ethics, studies in the Old Testament, Studies in the New Testament, Systematic Theology, Bible and Moral Issues, and Intercultural studies at Moi University. She also prepares pastors for ministry through the work of Africa International University. Her areas of research interest include work with refugees, internally displaced persons and vulnerable children. Emily is Co-Secretary

Rev Joseph Kigen Katwa

Joseph Kigen Katwa, a male Kenyan born 12th December 1958. A Church Minister among the Baptist group of Churches (A.I.C) and currently Chaplain Moi University College of Health Sciences. A holder of MA (MA in Community Pastoral Care HIV/AIDS), currently doing MSC in International Health Research Ethics, at Moi University School of Medicine. His major area of interest is holistic pastoral care, where a human being is cared for spiritually, physically and health wise.

Dr. Dinah Chelagat 

Dr. Dinah Chelagat a female Kenyan born on 19th December 1958.Currently a Senior Lecturer and Dean, School of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, Moi University. She is a holder of PhD in Nursing from the University of the Free State (Graduated in July 2015), MPH from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, MA. From the University of Exeter, UK, BA in Biblical studies from International Pastoral Training Center (IPTC), Eldoret, Kenya, and Diploma and Advanced diploma from the Kenya Medical Training Center.

Dr. Patel Kirtika Tushar

Kirtika Patel (Phd) is the Head of the Department of Immunology in the School of Medicine at Moi University. She is married and has two daughters. Along with administrative and teaching duties her main research interest is setting up of techniques for cancer diagnosis. She is currently involved in setting up the biorepository at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. Her current research interest is spirituality and Immunology.

Rev. Joseph Mothaly 

Rev. Joseph K Mothaly was born in 1961 and raised in Samburu. In 2004-2005 he went to Harris Methodist Hospital in Forthwith Texas to study Clinical Pastoral Education. He was attached to the same hospital. He further trained for CPE Supervisory course in 2009 at Loiville University. In 2010, Rev. Joseph K. Mothaly graduated with a BTH from Presbyterian University. From 2016, he has been instrumental in training and leading the CPE program at the National Chaplaincy Training Centre, Moi University. He is passionate about turning lay chaplains to professional spiritual care providers. 

    Dr. Ashraf Mohamed Mohamed Ali Emarah 

    The Late Ashraf Mohamed Mohamed Ali Emarah, born in 1964, is a Muslim by Religion. He holds M.B.B.Ch. (1988); M.Sc. Surgery (1993); Masters of Surgery MD Surgery (2005) and Doctor of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) all from Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University .Cairo, Egypt. From 2001 t0 2006 Dr. Ashraf worked as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, and from 2006 to date, worked as Lecturer of Plastic Surgery, School of Medicine, Moi University. He is Member of the Egyptian Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons; Member of the Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery; Member of ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetics Plastic Surgeons), and, is in the process of becoming International Member of American society of Plastic Surgeons
